This evening A Tale of A Tub and Cinema KINO present recent films by artist duo Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme, in relation to classics by Waël Noureddine and Mounir Fatmi. Film-critic Olivier Hadouchi, art historian Karima Boudou and A Tale of A Tub director Nathanja van Dijk will discuss the artists’ search for an alternative political language and aesthetic.

In their work the artists and filmmakers Abbas and Abou-Rahme sample sound, image, text and objects from different places and times. With their films, sound-works and installations they reconsider the circulation and value of images and offer new ways to understand history and a sense of time and place in the Middle East. In their films they create hyper-sensory audiovisual landscapes rooted in the real. These immersive new worlds then suggest an escape from, or alternative to colonial narratives and discourse by drawing the contours of a parallel or even a-historical time.

During the screening we will contextualize Abbas & Abou-Rahme’s work by drawing lines with the films by Fatmi and Noureddine, focusing on their use of (moving) image and inter-titles as a way to explore spatial politics, geopolitical fragmentation, and forms of entanglement between the destruction of bodies and the erasure of images, and under which conditions they might return.
