Vengeance of the Phoenix Sisters at KINO Rotterdam

We’re excited to be teaming up with KINO Rotterdam to present a screening of Vengeance of the Phoenix Sisters, a Taiwanese action film from 1968. After bandits kill a former sheriff and his wife, a servant carries their three daughters to safety, but they grow up apart. Fifteen years later, each girl sets out to seek revenge. Eldest sister Xiufeng disguises herself as a man, performing acts of chivalry as she seeks out the bandits. Along the way, she runs across her sisters, Qingfeng and Zhifeng.

Selected by Jay Tan, this film is being shown as part of a public program surrounding their exhibition at A Tale of A Tub, which runs until February 2. For the occasion, Tan will briefly introduce the film and the career of Li-Hua Yang, a female Chinese opera performer and actor who, unusually for Chinese opera, played a wide variety of male roles.
